Overview
Preparation Instructions
Bring all current inhalers to every appointment. Complete the Childhood Asthma Control Test (c-ACT) questionnaire before the appointment. Inform the team of any recent courses of oral steroids, GP or A&E visits for asthma, or night-waking from cough or wheeze. Notify the school nurse of the asthma diagnosis.
What to Expect
Peak flow is measured if age-appropriate. Inhaler technique is observed and corrected. Asthma control is assessed using the c-ACT score. Trigger factors are identified and avoidance strategies discussed. The treatment step is reviewed and a written personalised asthma action plan is provided or updated.
Recovery
Use the preventer inhaler every day even when feeling well. Follow the written asthma action plan if symptoms worsen. Attend the emergency department if reliever inhaler provides no relief or breathing is very fast or laboured. Attend all scheduled asthma review appointments.
